Sometimes, despite the best maintenance and service, a mobility scooter can still break down unexpectedly. In such situations, it's important to be prepared and take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and get the assistance you need.
Here's a guide on what to do if your mobility scooter breaks down:
Stay calm and assess the situation: If your scooter suddenly stops working or exhibits any issues, remain calm and try to determine the extent of the problem. Check for any obvious signs of damage or loose connections.
Ensure your safety: If you're in a busy or potentially dangerous area, try to move your mobility scooter to a safe location, such as a sidewalk or a designated parking area. If you're unable to move the scooter or if it's not safe to do so, turn on the hazard lights or use any other visible indicators to alert others to your situation.
Contact someone for assistance: It's a good idea to carry a mobile phone with you while using a mobility scooter. If your scooter breaks down, use your phone to call a friend, family member, or caregiver who can provide help. Inform them about your location, the problem you're facing, and any relevant details they should know.
Seek help from a passersby: If you're unable to contact someone directly, try to get the attention of people passing by. Politely ask if they can assist you in moving the scooter to a safe place and help you walk to a nearby shop, café, or other public area where you can wait for further assistance.
Wait for assistance to arrive: If you've managed to contact someone, inform them of your whereabouts and wait for their arrival. If you're unable to reach anyone immediately, it's important to remain patient and wait for help to arrive. If possible, ask someone nearby if you can wait in a safe location until assistance arrives.
Contact the mobility scooter provider: If you're using a mobility scooter on short-term hire, like those from Coco Mobility, and experience a breakdown, inform the provider as soon as possible. They will arrange for a replacement scooter to be delivered to you promptly. Follow their instructions and provide any necessary details regarding the breakdown.
Schedule regular servicing: If you own a mobility scooter, it's crucial to have it serviced at least once a year, even if it seems to be in good working order. Regular maintenance can help identify and prevent potential issues before they occur, reducing the chances of a breakdown.
Remember, it's always advisable to prioritize your safety and take precautions to avoid potential breakdowns. However, if a breakdown does happen, following these steps will help you handle the situation and get the necessary assistance efficiently.
