In line with the UK`s government VAT rules and regulations disabled people can buy, lease or rent certain goods without paying VAT (the current VAT rate is 20%)
Goods you can buy, lease or hire VAT-free because of your disability include:
Medical and surgical appliances, wheelchairs and mobility scooters, equipment to aid the hard of hearing and low vision aids, specialist beds, chair and stair lifts, rise and recline chairs and other lifting equipment and sanitary devices
Also goods that have been designed solely for disabled people such as
Computer equipment, emergency alarm call systems, boats, parts and accessories
If you are hiring or buying a mobility scooter (or any mobility aids) for yourself and you are chronically sick or disabled then it is more than likely that you will be eligible for VAT Relief – this is where the product is supplied VAT-Free.
For VAT relief purposes, you’re considered chronically sick or disabled if you have
A physical or mental impairment which has a long term and substantial adverse effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities
A condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness (that’s a long-term health condition)
The term ‘chronically sick or disabled’ does not include a person who’s only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, for example with a broken limb or someone who’s elderly but is not chronically sick or disabled.
Some of our more commonly accepted long-term health conditions can be found below:
Alzheimers, Amputee, Angina, Ankylosing Spondylitus, Arthritis, Ataxia, Bronchiectasis, Cancer, Cerebellum Ataxia, Cerebral Palsy, Cerebral Vasculitis, Chronic Arthritis, COPD, Degenerative Spine, Dementia, Diabetes, Diverticulitis, Emphysema, Epilepsy, Fibromyalgia, Functional Movement Disorder, Lymphedema, Motor Neuron Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Myelitis, Oedema, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Parkinson's, Partially Sighted, Peripheral Vascular Disease, Pneumonia, Polymyositis, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, Respiratory Failure, Heumatism, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scoliosis, Spina Bifida, Spondylitis, Stenosis, Stroke.
The above list is not comprehensive and there are many other conditions that qualify for VAT Relief.
To show that you are entitled to either hire or buy the mobility scooter or mobility aids with VAT Relief, we will ask you to make a self-declaration (complete a form), confirming your eligibility when hiring or buying a mobility scooter or mobility aids.
When you either collect the mobility scooter from our store or when we deliver to you location our staff will ask if you qualify for the VAT relief. If this is the case then we will supply you with a VAT Relief Self Declaration form that you can complete before we take payment.
