Mobility Scooter VAT Information

Please note that all prices displayed on our website are exclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT).

This policy applies specifically to equipment designed for disabled individuals, including mobility scooters, powerchairs, wheelchairs, and other mobility products.

Qualifying individuals have the option to hire or purchase these products without paying VAT.

This section provides information on who can qualify for VAT exemption, the types of products covered, and the process for obtaining mobility products without VAT.

VAT Exemption for Hiring & Purchasing

If you meet the criteria for VAT exemption, you will not be charged VAT when hiring or purchasing mobility goods under the VAT relief scheme. Coco Mobility will only charge you the VAT-free amount, eliminating the need for upfront payment and subsequent reimbursement from the government.

Who Qualifies for VAT Exemption?

Individuals who are chronically sick or disabled are eligible for VAT-free hiring or purchasing of mobility products. The products must be intended for personal use and not for business purposes. Age does not directly affect VAT exemption for mobility products. Examples of qualifying products include mobility scooters, powerchairs, wheelchairs, and various other mobility aids.

Definition of Chronically Sick or Disabled

For VAT relief purposes, 'chronically sick or disabled' is defined by Her Majesty’s Customs & Revenue (HMRC) as follows:

Having a physical or mental impairment that substantially and adversely affects everyday activities in the long term.

Having a condition recognized by the medical profession as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes.

Having a terminal illness.

Temporary mobility impairments, such as a broken leg or postoperative recovery, do not qualify for VAT exemption.

Self-Declaration for VAT Exemption

VAT exemption operates through self-declaration, meaning you complete and sign a form confirming that you meet the criteria for being 'chronically sick or disabled' as described above. No independent or NHS medical assessment is required.

Declaration forms are available from Coco Mobility, and you can fill them out at the time of hire or purchase. If the purchaser is unable to sign the declaration form, a parent, guardian, doctor, or caregiver can sign on their behalf. Alternatively, an online declaration form is also accessible on this website.
